Spectral line shape study of HCl broadened by He, Ar and SF6: A test case of the Hartmann-Tran profile

Abstract: The Hartmann-Tran (HT) profile, recently recommended by IUPAC [Tennyson et al, Pur. Appl. Chem., 2014, 86, 1931-1943] to represent the spectral shape of high-resolution absorption transition was tested by comparison with measured spectra of ro-vibrational lines of HCl broadened by He, Ar and SF6. For this, high-resolution spectra of two HCl lines [R(5) and R(9)] in the fundamental band were recorded with a difference-frequency laser spectrometer. These lines having strong Dicke narrowing effect and measured in large ranges of pressures with different collision-partners thus provide a meaningful test of the HT profile. The results showed that the HT profile allows describing the measured spectra within the experimental noise for all considered collision-partner and all pressure conditions.
